Assamese Grammar - Negation

Hi Assamese learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about negation in Assamese. Negation is a way of expressing the opposite of something. It is an important part of any language and it is essential to understand how to use it correctly in order to communicate effectively.

Negation in Assamese

Negation in Assamese is expressed using the particle na (ন). This particle is placed after the verb or adjective that is being negated. For example:

Assamese Pronunciation English Translation
আমি গাছ খেতে না Àmi gàch kheté nà I don't cut trees
আমি খুব সুন্দর না Àmi khub sundar nà I'm not very beautiful
আমি এখন যাওয়া না Àmi ékhon jàwà nà I'm not going now
আমি আমার বন্ধুর সাথে খেলতে না Àmi àmar bôndhur sàthe khelté nà I don't play with my friends

It is important to note that the particle na (ন) is always placed after the verb or adjective that is being negated. It cannot be placed before the verb or adjective. For example:

Incorrect Correct
আমি না গাছ খেতে আমি গাছ খেতে না
আমি না খুব সুন্দর আমি খুব সুন্দর না
আমি না এখন যাওয়া আমি এখন যাওয়া না
আমি না আমার বন্ধুর সাথে খেলতে আমি আমার বন্ধুর সাথে খেলতে না

It is also important to note that the particle na (ন) is not used when the verb or adjective is in the negative form already. For example:

Assamese Pronunciation English Translation
আমি গাছ খেতে নাই Àmi gàch kheté nài I don't cut trees
আমি খুব সুন্দর নাই Àmi khub sundar nài I'm not very beautiful
আমি এখন যাওয়া নাই Àmi ékhon jàwà nài I'm not going now
আমি আমার বন্ধুর সাথে খেলতে নাই Àmi àmar bôndhur sàthe khelté nài I don't play with my friends

In addition to the particle na (ন), there are other ways to express negation in Assamese. For example, the particle naa (না) can be used to express strong negation. The particle naa (না) is placed before the verb or adjective that is being negated. For example:

Assamese Pronunciation English Translation
আমি গাছ খেতে নাও Àmi gàch kheté nào I definitely don't cut trees
আমি খুব সুন্দর নাও Àmi khub sundar nào I'm definitely not very beautiful
আমি এখন যাওয়া নাও Àmi ékhon jàwà nào I definitely won't go now
আমি আমার বন্ধুর সাথে খেলতে নাও Àmi àmar bôndhur sàthe khelté nào I definitely don't play with my friends

The particle naa (না) is used to express strong negation and is usually used in response to a question. For example:

Q: আপনি গাছ খেতে হবেন? (Àpni gàch kheté hôbén?)
A: নাও, আমি গাছ খেতে নাও। (Nào, Àmi gàch kheté nào.)

Q: আপনি এখন যাওয়া হবেন? (Àpni ékhon jàwà hôbén?)
A: নাও, আমি এখন যাওয়া নাও। (Nào, Àmi ékhon jàwà nào.)

Finally, it is important to note that the particle na (ন) can also be used to express a wish or desire. For example:

Assamese Pronunciation English Translation
আমি গাছ খেতে নাই Àmi gàch kheté nài I wish I didn't cut trees
আমি খুব সুন্দর নাই Àmi khub sundar nài I wish I wasn't so beautiful
আমি এখন যাওয়া নাই Àmi ékhon jàwà nài I wish I wasn't going now
আমি আমার বন্ধুর সাথে খেলতে নাই Àmi àmar bôndhur sàthe khelté nài I wish I didn't play with my friends

In conclusion, negation in Assamese is expressed using the particle na (ন). This particle is placed after the verb or adjective that is being negated. The particle naa (না) can also be used to express strong negation and is usually used in response to a question. Finally, the particle na (ন) can also be used to express a wish or desire.
