Swedish Grammar - Negation

Hi Swedish learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will be discussing the basics of negation in Swedish. Negation is an important part of any language, and it is essential to understand how to use it correctly in order to communicate effectively. We will look at the different ways to express negation in Swedish, as well as some examples of how to use them in context. So let's get started!

Negation in Swedish

Negation in Swedish is expressed using a variety of words and phrases. The most common way to express negation is to use the word inte (not). This word can be used to negate both verbs and adjectives. For example:

Swedish Pronunciation English Translation
Jag äter inte. yah eht-er in-teh I'm not eating.
Han är inte snäll. han ehr in-teh snel He is not nice.

Another way to express negation in Swedish is to use the phrase utan att (without). This phrase is used to express that something is not done or that something does not happen. For example:

Swedish Pronunciation English Translation
Jag går utan att se. yah gor oo-tan att seh I go without seeing.
Han kommer utan att säga något. han kom-er oo-tan att seh-gah no-got He comes without saying anything.

The phrase utan att can also be used to express that something is not done in a certain way. For example:

Swedish Pronunciation English Translation
Jag går utan att springa. yah gor oo-tan att shpring-ah I go without running.
Han kommer utan att skrika. han kom-er oo-tan att skrik-ah He comes without screaming.

Finally, the phrase utan att can also be used to express that something is not done at all. For example:

Swedish Pronunciation English Translation
Jag går utan att prata. yah gor oo-tan att pra-tah I go without talking.
Han kommer utan att le. han kom-er oo-tan att leh He comes without smiling.

These are just a few of the ways to express negation in Swedish. There are many more, and it is important to understand them all in order to communicate effectively in Swedish.
