Central Atlas Tamazight has a complex system of plurals, which can be difficult to master. In this lesson, we will look at the different types of plurals and how they are formed.

Plural Formation

The formation of plurals in Central Atlas Tamazight is based on the gender of the noun. Nouns can be either masculine or feminine, and the plural form of the noun will depend on its gender.

Masculine Plurals

Masculine nouns form their plurals by adding the suffix -in to the end of the word. For example, the word for "man" is amghar, and the plural form is amgharin.

Feminine Plurals

Feminine nouns form their plurals by adding the suffix -an to the end of the word. For example, the word for "woman" is tamghart, and the plural form is tamghartan.

Irregular Plurals

There are some nouns that do not follow the regular rules for forming plurals. These nouns have irregular plurals that must be memorized. Here are some examples of irregular plurals:

• tafukt (house) → tifukin (houses)
• tamurt (country) → timurin (countries)
• tamzwarut (language) → timzwarin (languages)

Plural Agreement

When using a plural noun in a sentence, the verb must agree with the number of the noun. If the noun is singular, then the verb must be in the singular form. If the noun is plural, then the verb must be in the plural form.

For example:

• Amghar yemmut (The man is sleeping).
• Amgharin yemmuten (The men are sleeping).
