The past imperfective denoted an action that was in progress or occurred at some moment in the past. It presents the action as:
1) repetitive or habitually occurring.
Тарас рідко писав листи. - Taras rarely wrote letter.
2) an open-ended process without regard for whether or not it was ever completed.
Тарас писав книгу вчора. - Taras wrote a book yesterday.
3) a one-time specific action in the past, a statement of fact with the implication that there is no need to repeat the action again. In this meaning it is often accompanied by the verb вже - already. In this usage, the imperfective past is synonymous with the perfective past.
Ми вже бачили цей фільм - We already saw this film.
Past tense ending ( with the verb "їсти"- "to eat" as an example):
Я | їв/їла | ми | їли |
ти | їв/їла | ви | їли |
він/вона/воно | їв/їла | вони | їли |
