へ and を particles

In Japanese, particles are essential elements that help us understand the grammatical function of each word in a sentence. In this lesson, we will learn how to use the particles へ and を.

The particle へ

The particle へ indicates direction, destination, or goal. It is often used with verbs of movement, such as 行く (iku) and 来る (kuru).

Here are some examples:

Japanese Pronunciation Finnish
学校へ gakkou e kouluun
公園へ kouen e puistoon
駅へ eki e asemalle
友達の家へ tomodachi no ie e kaverin taloon

Notice that へ is always written in hiragana.

The particle を

The particle を indicates the direct object of an action or the goal of a movement. It is often used with transitive verbs, such as 食べる (taberu) and 見る (miru).

Here are some examples:

Japanese Pronunciation Finnish
果物を kudamono wo hedelmiä
映画を eiga wo elokuvan
日本語を nihongo wo japania
手紙を tegami wo kirjeen

Notice that を is always written in hiragana.

Difference between へ and を

The difference between へ and を can be confusing for beginners. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

- へ indicates direction or goal, while を indicates the direct object of an action or the goal of a movement. - へ is often used with verbs of movement, while を is often used with transitive verbs. - When in doubt, remember that へ points to a place, whereas を points to an object.

Let's see some examples:

  • 私は学校へ行きます。 (watashi wa gakkou e ikimasu) - I go to school (direction).
  • 私はリンゴを食べます。 (watashi wa ringo wo tabemasu) - I eat an apple (direct object).

Practice

Now it's time to practice using へ and を. Translate the following sentences into Finnish:

  1. 私は公園へ行きます。
  2. 彼女は映画を見ます。
  3. 私たちはレストランへ行きました。
  4. あなたは何を食べますか。

Here are the answers:

  1. Minä menen puistoon.
  2. Hän katsoo elokuvaa.
  3. Me menimme ravintolaan.
  4. Mitä sinä syöt?

Congratulations! You have learned how to use the particles へ and を in Japanese sentences. Keep practicing and you will soon be able to express yourself in Japanese with ease!
