Prepositions

In Burmese, prepositions are placed before nouns or pronouns to describe the position or direction of the object in relation to another object or place. Let's go through some common prepositions and their usage:

Burmese Pronunciation English Translation
အနားပေါင်း 'anà:paung' To the north of
အနှောင်း 'anhaung' To the south of
ပြည်ပုံ 'prany pum' In front of
နောက်ပိုင်း 'nauk' 'ping' Behind
အရပ်စွဲ 'arap swè' Next to
အရည်အသွေး 'aryanyathwe' Between
အသည်းခြင်း 'athìn: hkyin' Across from

It's important to note that Burmese prepositions are usually placed after the object for emphasis. For example:

  • ကလေးသည် လွှတ်တော် အောက်ပိုင်း အနောက်မှာ လက်ရှိ တစ်စုံ ပုံသဏ္ဏများ ဖြပ်တော်ပေးသည်။
  • English: The boy drew a line across the middle of the paper.

In this example, the preposition အပိုင်း (across) is placed after the object (the paper) to emphasize the direction of the line.

Conjunctions

Conjunctions are words that join words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence. In Burmese, conjunctions are placed between the words, phrases, or clauses that they connect. Here are some common conjunctions in Burmese:

  • နှင့်
  • နဲ့
  • ပြောပြပါ
  • တက်လိုတဲ့
  • နောက်ထပ်
  • အရမ်းလေးလုံးက

Conjunctions can be used to connect sentences or clauses to express relationships between ideas. Here are some examples:

  • ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ အကြိမ်သို့ သွားတော့မယ်။ ပြောပြပါ။
  • English: Let's go to the park and play.

In this example, the conjunction နှင့် (and) is used to join two verbs together, expressing the idea of doing both activities at the same time.
