Burmese Vocabulary - Geography

Hi Burmese learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will cover the basic geographical vocabulary in Burmese. Understanding geography is essential when it comes to traveling or simply knowing about the world around us. So let's dive into it and learn some Burmese geography vocabulary!

Once you've mastered this lesson, take a look at these related pages: Months of the Year & Express Surprise.

Landforms[edit | edit source]

Landforms are natural features of the earth's surface, and here are some Burmese words for some common landforms:

Burmese Pronunciation English
တောင် taung mountain
တောင်ကြီး taung gyi hill
တွေးကြီး twe gyi valley
ကျေးရွာ kyay ya wa plain
သွားလာတော် swa la taung plateau

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: ဒီတောင်ကြီးမှာ ဘယ်လောက်ရှိနေလဲ။ (Where is this hill?)
  • Person 2: ဒီတောင်ကြီး မှာ စောင့်နေလို့။ (I am standing on this hill.)

Water Forms[edit | edit source]

Just like landforms, water forms are also natural features of the earth's surface. In Burmese, here are some common water forms:

Burmese Pronunciation English
ကြောင့် kyaung lake
ကန် kan river
ခရမ်း khami stream
ဆေးကန်း se kan waterfall
ထောက်ဖက် taok hpaik estuary

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: ဒီကန်ဘယ်လောက်ပြောပြလိုက်တယ်လဲ။ (Where does this river lead to?)
  • Person 2: ဒီကန် မှာယူပြီး ထိုင်းနွေးပိုင်းပြီး သွားသွားနေပြီ။ (This river flows into the sea.)

Direction[edit | edit source]

In order to give and understand directions, it's important to know the basic directional words in Burmese:

Burmese Pronunciation English
မြောက် myaw ka north
တောင်ကြီး taung gyi east
ဆေးရှင် se shin west
တောင်လှည့် taung hlwan south

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: ယခုလောက်ကို တောင်ကြီးလိုက်တယ်။ (We need to go towards the east.)
  • Person 2: ကျန်းမာရေး အီးမေးလေးက မြောက်ကို လုပ်ရင်တောင်လိုက်ပါ။ (The immigration office is located in the north. Let's head there.)

Climate[edit | edit source]

Climate plays a huge role in geography, and here are some Burmese words about different climates:

Burmese Pronunciation English
ရေမြစ် yey mas tropical
ဆောင်းပြီး saung pri humid
တောင်းပန် taung pan dry
အခြေအနေ ahshein ahnei hot and cold (inconsistent temperature)

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: ကျွန်တော်တို့မှာ တောင်းပန်လိုတော့မယ်။ (It's usually dry in our region.)
  • Person 2: အခြေအနေ မှာ ဆဲဖြစ်လား။ (Do you experience inconsistent temperature here?)
