Hi Afrikaans learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will explore the vocabulary related to feelings and emotions in Afrikaans.

Consider broadening your understanding by checking out these related lessons: Family & Saying Hello and Goodbye.

Basic Emotions[edit | edit source]

Let's start with some basic emotions.

Afrikaans Pronunciation English
bly /bləi/ happy
lief /liːf/ in love
kwaad /kwaːt/ angry
bang /baŋ/ scared

Here's a quick dialogue so you can see these words in context:

  • Person 1: Ek is bly. (/I am happy./)
  • Person 2: Ek is lief vir jou. (/I love you./)
  • Person 1: Jy maak my kwaad. (/You make me angry./)
  • Person 2: Moenie bang wees nie. (/Don't be scared./)

Complex Emotions[edit | edit source]

Moving on to more complex emotions, let's learn some new words.

Afrikaans Pronunciation English
trots /trots/ proud
beledig /bəliːdiχ/ offended
treurig /treiəriχ/ sad
verbaas /fərbaːs/ surprised
jaloers /jəluərs/ jealous

Here's another dialogue to illustrate these words:

  • Person 1: Ek is trots op jou. (/I am proud of you./)
  • Person 2: Het ek jou beledig? (/Did I offend you?/)
  • Person 1: Ja, ek voel treurig. (/Yes, I feel sad./)
  • Person 2: Ek is verbaas oor jou reaksie. (/I am surprised by your reaction./)
  • Person 1: Hoekom is jy so jaloers? (/Why are you so jealous?/)

Conclusion[edit | edit source]

That's it for our Afrikaans vocabulary lesson on feelings and emotions. These are just some of the many words to describe how you feel. To improve your Afrikaans Vocabulary, you can also use the Polyglot Club website. Find native speakers and ask them any questions!
