When verbs in their infinitive form get a definite article, they become nouns. For example: լողալ - “to think” becomes լողալը “the act/activity of swimming”, ուտել - “to eat” becomes ուտելը - “the act/activity of eating”, մտածել - “to think” becomes մտածելը - “the act/activity of thinking” etc.

Verb Declension in Armenian

When verbs in their infinitive form get a definite article, they become nouns. For example: լողալ - “to think” becomes լողալը “the act/activity of swimming”, ուտել - “to eat” becomes ուտելը - “the act/activity of eating”, մտածել - “to think” becomes մտածելը - “the act/activity of thinking” etc.

As with nouns and pronouns Armenian verbs can be declined in Armenian. Verbs change their meaning according to the case in which they are declined. Below is an example of the verb գնալ put into the seven different cases.

Nominative  գնալ 
  • Ալանի գնալը խանգարեց մեր գործին:
  • Alan’s departure(going) bothered our work. 
Genitive  գնալու 
  • Ժաննայի Փարիզ գնալու նպատակը ճամփորդելն էր:
  • Zhanna’s reason for going to Paris was to travel. 
Dative  գնալու(ն) 
  • Պատրաստ չէինք Արմինեի գնալուն:
  • We were not prepared for Armine’s departure (going). 
Accusative  գնալ(ը) 
  • Ես հիշում եմ Արմինեի գնալը։
  • I remember Armine’s departure. 
Ablative  գնալուց 
  • Տնօրենի գնալուց հետո բոլորը սկսեցին պարել:
  • After the director’s departure, everyone began to dance. 
Instrumental  գնալով 
  • Սփյուռքահայերը պարելով հայերեն են սովորում։
  • Diasporans are learning Armenian while dancing. 
Locative  գնալու 
  • մեջ Ցույցի գնալու մեջ ոչ մի լավ բան չեմ տեսնում:
  • I don’t see anything good in going to the demonstration.
