In Armenian to refer to a specific object, the definite article is used. The definite article is formed according to the following rule:
For example:
1)
- Մարդը քնում է։
The man is sleeping.
But
- Մարդն ուտում է։
The man is eating.
2)
- Տղան գնում է դպրոց։
The boy goes to school.
3)
- Հիմա խանութը փակ է:
Now the store is closed.
But
- Հիմա խանութն ազատ է։
Now the store is free.
Unlike English, in Armenian the definite article is also used with proper names.
1) Արթուրը գնում է դպրոց: (The) Arthur goes to school.
2) Երևանը Հայաստանի մայրաքաղաքն է։ Yerevan is the capital city of Armenia.
The definite article is always used if a subject follows a possessive noun or pronoun.
1) Իմ տղան ինը տարեկան է: My boy is nine years old.
2) Մեր շունը մեծ է: Our dog is big. In Armenian plural nouns can also acquire the definite article.
For example:
1) Մեծ շներն ուտում են միս։ (The) big dogs eat meat.
2) Փոքր երեխաները վազում են։ (The) little children run.
3) Վարորդները քշում են մեքենաներ։ (The) drivers drive cars.
