Introduction
Hello everyone and welcome to the Armenian Grammar course! In this lesson, we will be covering the basic concepts of Noun and Pronoun. Nouns are words used to name a person, place, thing, or idea, while pronouns are words used to take the place of a noun. By the end of this lesson, you will have learned how to identify and use nouns and pronouns in Armenian language.
Nouns
A noun is a word that is used to name a person, place, thing, or idea. All Armenian nouns have gender, either masculine or feminine. When writing in Armenian, it is important to use the correct article (definite or indefinite) depending on the gender of the noun. However, for the purpose of this lesson, we will concentrate on the basic concept of nouns.
Here are some examples of Armenian nouns:
Armenian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
տուն (tun) | toon | House |
կենդանակ (kendanak) | ken-da-na-k | Animal |
ծնող (tsnogh) | tsnogh | Parent |
վարորդ (varord) | va-rort | Driver |
Using Nouns in Sentences
In Armenian language, the basic sentence structure follows the subject-verb-object order. That means the subject comes first, followed by the verb and then the object. Here is an example of a simple Armenian sentence:
"Ես գրում եմ" (Yes grum em) which means "I am writing". In this sentence, "Ես" (Yes) is the subject, "գրում" (grum) is the verb, and "եմ" (em) is the object.
Pronouns
A pronoun is a word that is used to replace a noun in a sentence. In Armenian language, pronouns come in several forms depending on the person speaking, the person being spoken to, and the grammatical gender. Here are some examples of Armenian pronouns:
Personal Pronouns | Possessive Pronouns | Reflexive Pronouns |
---|---|---|
ես (es) I |
իմ (im) mine |
ինձ (indz) myself |
դու (du) you (sing.) |
քո (ko) yours |
քոյդ (koyd) yourself |
նա (na) he/she/it |
իր (ir) his/hers/its |
իրը (iry) himself/herself/itself |
Using Pronouns in Sentences
As mentioned earlier, pronouns are used to replace nouns in sentences. Here is an example sentence with a personal pronoun:
"Ես գրում եմ" (Yes grum em) which means "I am writing". Instead of using the noun "Ես" (Yes) for "I" in the previous example, the pronoun ես (es) was used.
Conclusion
In this lesson, we have covered the basic concepts of Nouns and Pronouns in Armenian language. We learned that nouns are words used to name a person, place, thing, or idea and that all nouns in Armenian have gender. We also learned that pronouns are words used to replace nouns in sentences and come in several forms depending on the person speaking, the person being spoken to, and the grammatical gender.
Make sure to practice identifying and using nouns and pronouns in your own sentences to become more comfortable with these concepts. In the next lesson, we will be covering Verb Conjugation in Armenian language.
