In this lesson, you will learn how to properly use adjectives in North Azerbaijani, as well as how to form the comparative and superlative forms.
Adjectives
In North Azerbaijani, adjectives generally come after the noun they modify. For example, "qara kitab" means "black book".
Sometimes, however, the adjective can come before the noun for emphasis. For example, "kiçik köpək" means "small dog", but "köpək kiçik" means "a dog that is small".
Adjectives in North Azerbaijani can also be used as nouns. For example, "kiçik" means "small", but "kiçiklər" means "small ones".
One important thing to note about North Azerbaijani adjectives is that they do not change form to agree with the noun they modify, unlike in many other languages. For example, "kitablar qara" means "black books", with the same form of "qara" used for both singular and plural.
Comparative and superlative
To form the comparative and superlative forms of adjectives in North Azerbaijani, the suffix "-dən" is added for the comparative form and "-dən ən" for the superlative form.
For example, to say "bigger", you add "-dən" to the end of the adjective "böyük", making "böyükdən".
To say "the biggest", you add "-dən ən" to the end of the adjective "böyük", making "böyükdən ən".
Here are more examples:
North Azerbaijani | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
böyük | bo-yuk | big |
böyükdən | bo-yuk-den | bigger |
böyükdən ən | bo-yuk-den en | the biggest |
yaxşı | yakh-she | good |
yaxşıdan | yakh-she-dan | better |
yaxşıdan ən | yakh-she-dan en | the best |
It's important to note that the "-dən" and "-dən ən" suffixes cannot be used with all adjectives. Some adjectives may require different forms for the comparative and superlative, or may not have a comparative or superlative form at all.
Practice
- Make sentences using the comparative and superlative forms of adjectives in North Azerbaijani.
- Practice using adjectives in both the pre- and post-nominal positions.
