UkrainianGrammar → Verbs - Future Tense

Introduction

Hi there, welcome to this Ukrainian lesson where we will be discussing the future tense in Ukrainian verbs. This lesson is part of a larger course titled "Complete 0 to A1 Ukrainian Course". This lesson is aimed at complete beginners, so don't worry if you don't know any Ukrainian yet.

The future tense in Ukrainian is used to talk about events that will happen in the future. We use the future tense to talk about our plans, predictions, hopes, and wishes.

Regular Verbs in the Future Tense

Regular verbs in the future tense are formed by adding a set of endings to the infinitive form of the verb. The infinitive form of the verb is the form you find in a dictionary.

The endings depend on the gender and number of the subject. Here are the endings for regular verbs:

Pronoun Ending
Я (I) (ya) -м(о) (-mo)
Ти (you - singular) (ty) -ш (-sh)
Він (he) (vin) -тиме (-tyme)
Вона (she) (vona) -тиме (-tyme)
Воно (it) (vono) -тиме (-tyme)
Ми (we) (my) -мо(-є) (-mo(-ye))
Ви (you - plural) (vy) -те (-te)
Вони (they) (vony) -ть (-t')

As you can see, the endings are added to the infinitive verb form. Let's take the verb говорити (hovoryty) which means "to speak" as an example:

Ukrainian Pronunciation English
говорити hovoryty to speak

To form the future tense of this verb, we simply add the appropriate ending to it:

Pronoun Ukrainian Pronunciation English
Я говоритиму hovorytymu I will speak
Ти говоритимеш hovorytymesh You will speak
Він говоритиме hovorytyme He will speak
Вона говоритиме hovorytyme She will speak
Воно говоритиме hovorytyme It will speak
Ми говоритимемо hovorytymemo We will speak
Ви говоритимете hovorytymete You will speak
Вони говоритимуть hovorytyut' They will speak

Irregular Verbs in the Future Tense

Irregular verbs in the future tense do not follow the same pattern as regular verbs. There are only a few irregular verbs in the future tense, so they shouldn't be too hard to learn.

Here are the most common irregular verbs:

Ukrainian Pronunciation English Translation Future Tense
бути buty to be буду, будеш, буде, будемо, будете, будуть
мати maty to have матиму, матимеш, матиме, матимемо, матимете, матимуть
знати znaty to know знаю, знаєш, знає, знаємо, знаєте, знають
хотіти hotity to want хочу, хочеш, хоче, хочемо, хочете, хочуть

Using the Future Tense in Sentences

Now that we know how to form the future tense, let's see how we use it in sentences:

  • To express intentions, plans or arrangements:
    • Я завтра починаю вчитися. (I start studying tomorrow.)
    • Ми збираємося подорожувати наступного року. (We plan to travel next year.)
  • To make predictions:
    • Завтра буде дощ. (It will rain tomorrow.)
    • Я думаю, вона отримає роботу. (I think she will get the job.)
  • To express wishes:
    • Добре було б поїхати на море. (It would be good to go to the sea.)
    • Хотілося б вивчити ще одну мову. (I would like to learn another language.)

As you can see, the future tense is quite versatile and you can use it in many different ways. Try to practice forming sentences in the future tense with your friends or Ukrainian language partners.

Conclusion

Congratulations! Now you know how to form and use the future tense in Ukrainian. Keep practicing and you'll be speaking Ukrainian fluently in no time.
