As a Standard Estonian language teacher for twenty years, I have encountered many curious students who are interested in not only learning the language but also the culture and history of Estonia. In this lesson, we will delve into the international relations of Estonia, and learn about its membership in the European Union and NATO.

Estonia's Foreign Policy

Estonia is a proactive member of the international community and has developed a strong partnership with its European neighbors and the United States. Estonia's foreign policy is based on supporting democracy, human rights, and international law. Estonia is also committed to maintaining peace and stability in the region and around the world.

Estonia is a member of several international organizations such as the United Nations, the Council of Europe, and the World Trade Organization. Estonia also cooperates with other Nordic and Baltic countries through the Nordic-Baltic cooperation platform, and participates in regional cooperation through the Baltic Assembly and the Council of the Baltic Sea States.

European Union

Estonia has been a member of the European Union since May 2004. The EU provides Estonia with various benefits, such as access to the Single Market, and funding for various projects and programs. Estonia also shares a common currency with 18 other EU member states - the Euro, which it adopted in January 2011.

As an EU member, Estonia participates in shaping EU policies and decisions. Estonia is a member of various EU bodies and institutions, such as the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, and the European Commission.

NATO

Estonia joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 2004, as part of its policy of maintaining regional and global security. Through its membership in NATO, Estonia has increased its security and defense capabilities, and has taken an active part in NATO-led operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo.

Estonia is one of the few NATO members that meets the alliance's defense spending target of two percent of GDP - a commitment that reflects Estonia's strong dedication to defense and security.

Estonian-Russian Relations

Estonia shares a long border with Russia, which has a significant impact on the country's foreign policy. Estonia's relations with Russia have been complicated due to historical and political factors, such as the Soviet occupation of Estonia.

Despite these challenges, Estonia seeks to maintain constructive and pragmatic relations with Russia, based on mutual interests and respect for international law. Estonia also supports the EU and other international efforts to engage with Russia on issues such as security, climate change, and regional stability.

Conclusion

Estonia's foreign policy is reflective of the country's proactive approach to international relations, its commitment to democracy, and its pursuit of peace and stability in the region and around the world. As a member of the EU and NATO, Estonia has become an integral part of the international community, providing the country with various benefits and opportunities to shape regional and global policies and decisions.
