Sango Grammar - Give your Opinion

Hi Sango learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to give our opinion in Sango. Giving an opinion is almost essential in every language for everyday communication. Therefore, it is important to learn how to express yourself appropriately. We will also learn some interesting cultural facts about Sango speakers that will help us understand their language better.

Let's start!

Giving Your Opinion

When you want to give your opinion in Sango, you can use the expression "Nǎgǐ na dè" or "Me na dè". Both expressions mean "I think that..." or "In my opinion...". You can also use "Me tè" or "Nǎgǐ tè" which mean "I believe that...".

Here are some examples:

Sango Pronunciation English
Nǎgǐ na dè moto ya ńgǐse to. na-gi na-de moto ya ngi-se to I think that the car is expensive.
Me na dè karaǎ na lońgo se. me na-de ka-ra-a na lon-go se In my opinion, the food is delicious.
Nǎgǐ tè saǎsa na nyǎngǐ tè. na-gi te sa-asa na nyangi te I believe that the movie is interesting.

In Sango culture, opinions and respecting other people's opinions are important. It is considered impolite to interrupt someone while they are giving their opinion. Additionally, if you do not agree with someone's opinion, it is better to keep quiet rather than argue aggressively.

Now, let's practice our new knowledge with a dialogue:

  • Person 1: Nǎgǐ tè, the book is difficult to read. (I believe that the book is difficult to read.)
  • Person 2: Me na dè, I find it easy to read. (In my opinion, I find it easy to read.)
  • Person 1: Ngaara, ngi bon ya pǎsǎ na la tè. (Okay, I respect your opinion.)

Interesting Facts

Did you know that Sango, also known as Sangho, is the national language of the Central African Republic? It is part of the Ubangian language family and has over 5 million speakers worldwide.

Sango, despite being the official language of the country, is not the first or second language of the majority of Central Africans. However, it is widely used as a lingua franca across the country, especially in the capital city of Bangui. Sango has a unique vocabulary, with influences from both African and European languages like French and Portuguese.
