In this lesson, we will focus on the usage of "have" in Northern Kurdish grammar.
What is "Have" in Northern Kurdish?
In Northern Kurdish language, "have" is translated as "havîn" and is used to indicate possession or ownership. We use "have" to show that someone or something possesses or owns something. It is an important verb to know and can be used in various forms and tenses.
Present Tense
In the present tense, we use the verb "havîn" to indicate possession or ownership. Let's see some examples below:
Northern Kurdish | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
min heft caran havin. | min heft tʃaran havin. | I have seven cars. |
to heft hêz havî. | to heft hez havi. | You have seven strengths. |
ew hevalê xwe havî. | ew hevale xwe havi. | She has her own friend. |
Past Tense
In the past tense, "havîn" takes the form "hata". Let's take a look at some examples:

min piştî karînên xwe hata heft roj hatû. | min pʃti karinen xwe hat heft rozh hatu. | After my jobs, I had a seven-day rest. |
tu hata dirêjîya kozika xwe hatû. | tu hat dʃreʒiya koziyka xwe hatu. | You had a long sleep. |
ew piştî min siwar bû, lê hata piştî wî ve siwar bû. | ew pʃti min siwar bu, le hat pʃt wî ve siwar bu. | He got on after me, but he had got on before me. |
Future Tense
In the future tense, we use the verb "havîn" with auxiliary verbs "go" and "bûn". Here are some examples:

ez dawiya bextiyariya xwe dîtin, ez ê havîna hinek tiştan bibînim. | ez dawiya bextiyariya xwe ditin, ez e havina hinek tiʃtan bibinim. | I have seen the end of my luck, I will have to see some things. |
te dê hîn agir bibîne, lê ew dê hêza te havîna. | te de hin agir bibine, le ew de heza te havina. | You will still see fire, but you will have your strength. |
ew wê roj hata peyda bibe û hîn jî dê havîna piştî wî. | ew we roz hat pʃda bibi, u hin ji de havina pstit wî. | He will be born that day and will still have a future ahead of him. |
Negative Sentences
To make a negative sentence using "have", we simply add "ne" before the verb.

min tiştek tune havî. | min tiʃtek tun havi. | I don't have anything. |
ew heval tune havî. | ew heval tun havi. | He/She doesn't have a friend. |
me jî bavê xwe tune havîye. | me ji bave xwe tun haviye. | We also don't have our father. |
Dialogue
Here is a dialogue between two friends who are discussing their possessions:
- Person 1: Tu çi kesane havî?
- Person 2: Ez hevalên baş yên zêdetir havîn.
- Person 1: Min jî bi riya xwe yên zêdetir havîn.
- Person 2: Li ser mijarê mingavên xwe yên zêdetir havîn.
- Person 1: What do you have?
- Person 2: I have good and many friends.
- Person 1: I also have more possessions through my efforts.
- Person 2: I have more belongings on the subject of having more possessions.
Practice
To practice using "have" in Northern Kurdish, try to create some sentences describing your possessions or that of someone else.
