The basic structure for forming questions in Lao is quite simple. All you need to do is add a question particle at the end of the sentence. The most common question particle is ແມ່ນ (mɛ̌n). For example:

* ທ່ານຊື່ອອະໄຣຫຍັງ? (tâan sɯ̌ɯ ɤa rai nyang?) - What is that particular name?

Let's see some examples of questions being used in a dialogue:


* ທ່ານມີຊີວິດອະໄຣຫຍັງ? (tâan mi siiwít ɤa rai nyang?) - What is that particular thing that you have?  
* Person 1: ຕິດຕາມໃນຂອງເຈົ້າທີ່ເກີດ? (tid tamai now kong chao ti gap dao?) - What did you eat for breakfast?
* Person 2: ຂ້ອຍກະທຳຈິງ ຫຼືກະທຳປະເພດອາຫານ ທີ່ລະບົບ ຂ້ອຍໄດ້ນຳເຂົ້າຫຼາຍກວ່າໃນຄວາມເກີດ (khoy katham ching ho kgatham paepan ti leebok khoy dai nam khoy nai yuaga kao ti khamked) - I ate porridge or rice depending on the menu. I ate more than usual because I was hungry.

In this lesson, we will focus on the question words and how to form questions in Lao.

Basic Questions

Forming basic questions in Lao is quite simple. You only need to add the question word at the beginning of the statement. For example, the question word "ເຈົ້າ" (chao) means "you" and can be added to the beginning of the sentence to form a question about the person you are talking to. The intonation should be raised at the end of the question sentence.

  • ເຈົ້າມີນາງເທື່ອ? (chao mai nang tae?) - Do you have a younger sister?

Here are some of the most common question words to use:

ຫາກ hark if/whether
ດີ້ din how much/many
ເມືອງ maung where
ວັນເດືອນ van daen when
ຫວຽດ hwaid how
ຈົງ chong what
ບວກ bok why

For example:
