Saidi Arabic Grammar - How to Use "Be"

In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Saidi Arabic. We will look at the different forms of the verb and how to use them in sentences. We will also look at some examples of how to use the verb in context.

The verb "be" is used to express a state of being or existence. In Saidi Arabic, the verb "be" is conjugated differently depending on the subject of the sentence. The verb "be" is conjugated as follows:

Person Singular Plural
I انا (ana) نحن (naHn)
You (masc.) انت (anta) انتم (antum)
You (fem.) انتِ (anti) انتن (antunna)
He هو (huwa) هم (hum)
She هي (hiya) هن (hunna)
It هو (huwa) هي (hiya)

The verb "be" is used in many different ways in Saidi Arabic. Here are some examples of how to use the verb in sentences:

  • Person 1: انا مشغول (ana mišġuwl) (I am busy)
  • Person 2: انتِ سعيدة (anti sa'ida) (You are happy)
  • Person 1: هو متعب (huwa mut'ab) (He is tired)
  • Person 2: هي متأخرة (hiya mut'aḫira) (She is late)
  • Person 1: نحن مستعدون (naHn musta'idun) (We are ready)
  • Person 2: انتم متشائمون (antum muša'imun) (You are smiling)
  • Person 1: هن متحمسات (hunna muṭḥamisat) (They are excited)
  • Person 2: هي متواضعة (hiya mutawad'a) (It is humble)

The verb "be" can also be used to describe a person's physical characteristics. Here are some examples of how to use the verb in this way:

  • Person 1: انا طويل (ana ṭuwil) (I am tall)
  • Person 2: انتِ جميلة (anti jamila) (You are beautiful)
  • Person 1: هو صغير (huwa ṣaġir) (He is small)
  • Person 2: هي سميكة (hiya samika) (She is thick)
  • Person 1: نحن قويون (naHn qawiyun) (We are strong)
  • Person 2: انتم ذكور (antum ḏukur) (You are males)
  • Person 1: هن بطيئات (hunna baṭi'at) (They are slow)
  • Person 2: هي صغيرة (hiya ṣaġira) (It is small)

The verb "be" can also be used to describe a person's emotional state. Here are some examples of how to use the verb in this way:

  • Person 1: انا مستبحر (ana mustabaḥir) (I am excited)
  • Person 2: انتِ محزنة (anti maḥzuna) (You are sad)
  • Person 1: هو متشائم (huwa muša'im) (He is smiling)
  • Person 2: هي مضطربة (hiya ḍuṭruba) (She is agitated)
  • Person 1: نحن متفائلون (naHn muṭfa'ilun) (We are optimistic)
  • Person 2: انتم متشاؤمون (antum muša'imun) (You are smiling)
  • Person 1: هن متحزنات (hunna muṭḥazinat) (They are sad)
  • Person 2: هي متواضعة (hiya mutawad'a) (It is humble)

The verb "be" can also be used to describe a person's occupation or profession. Here are some examples of how to use the verb in this way:

  • Person 1: انا مهندس (ana muhannad) (I am an engineer)
  • Person 2: انتِ مدرسة (anti mudarrisa) (You are a teacher)
  • Person 1: هو طبيب (huwa ṭabib) (He is a doctor)
  • Person 2: هي محامية (hiya maḥamiyya) (She is a lawyer)
  • Person 1: نحن مصممون (naHn muṣammimun) (We are designers)
  • Person 2: انتم محاسبون (antum maḥasibun) (You are accountants)
  • Person 1: هن مصممات (hunna muṣammimat) (They are designers)
  • Person 2: هي محاسبة (hiya maḥasiba) (It is an accountant)
