Adjectives in Armenian

Adjectives are divided into two groups Those that:

1. Have comparative degrees (good, better, best)

2. Do not have comparative degrees

1) Let us first study adjectives with comparative degrees. One way to show a comparative degree is using words “ավելի …. քան” (more … than) or “պակաս/նվազ … քան” (less .. than). 1) Դու խելացի ես։ You are smart.

2) Դու ավելի խելացի ես, քան Աննան։ You are smarter than Anna.

3) Սա մեծ պայուսակ է։ This is a large bag.

4) Դա ավելի մեծ պայուսակ է, քան սա։ That is a bigger bag than this.

The comparative degree can also be expressed by using -ից ending. For example.

1) Հացը թանկ է։ Bread is expensive.

2) Գաթան հացից թանկ է։ Gata is more expensive than bread.

3) Ոսկին գաթայից թանկ է։ Gold is more expensive then gata.

Equal relationships with “as...as,” are translated by “նույնքան … որքան” and unequal ones with “not....as” are translated by “այնքան … չէ, որքան”.

1) Բիլը նույնքան խելացի է, որքան իր եղբայրը։ Bill is as smart as his brother.

2) Բիլն այնքան խելացի չէ, որքան իր եղբայրը։ Bill is not as smart as his brother.

For the superlative degree of comparison the ending “-ագույն” or the prefix “ամենա-” is used. For example:

1) Բիլն ամենախելացին է։ Bill is the smartest.

2) Սոնան փոքրագույն երեխան է։ Sona is the smallest child.

Sometimes adjectives can take either the prefix or the suffix (not simultaneously). For example, words ամենափոքր and փոքրագույն both exist. However, some adjectives can take only the prefix or the suffix. For example, the word ամենախելացի exist and is widely used, while խելացիագույն does not exist.

Now let us move to adjectives that do not have comparative degrees. Adjectives that do not have comparative degrees end with the following suffixes: -ական, -ային, -յա/ե, -ավոր. Several commonly used examples of each group of adjective is listed below:

աշխատանքային	of work

ապակյա	made of glass
քարե	rock
փայտյա	made of wood
կավե	clay
ոսկյա	golden
ռետինե	rubber
երկաթյա	iron
կաշվե	leather

-ավոր

գլխավոր	main
կամավոր	volunteer
հանցավոր	criminal
գունավոր	colored
մտավոր	mental
գրավոր	written
ակնոցավոր	one who wears glasses
բանավոր	oral
