Sinhala Grammar - Adjectives

Hi Sinhala learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing adjectives in Sinhala. Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns and pronouns. They can be used to give more information about the noun or pronoun they are describing. In this lesson, we will look at how to use adjectives in Sinhala, as well as some of the most common adjectives.

Types of Adjectives

Adjectives can be divided into two main categories: descriptive adjectives and possessive adjectives.

Descriptive Adjectives

Descriptive adjectives are used to describe the qualities of a noun or pronoun. Examples of descriptive adjectives include: big, small, tall, short, happy, sad, etc.

Possessive Adjectives

Possessive adjectives are used to show ownership or possession. Examples of possessive adjectives include: my, your, his, her, its, our, their, etc.

Adjective Placement

In Sinhala, adjectives usually come after the noun or pronoun they are describing. For example:

  • මම පුත්තර පුංචියක් ඇත. (I have a beautiful flower.)
  • ඔබ පුත්තර පුංචියක් ඇත්තේ නැත? (Do you have a beautiful flower?)

However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, when using the adjective "පුත්තර" (beautiful), it can come before the noun or pronoun it is describing. For example:

  • පුත්තර මම පුංචියක් ඇත. (I have a beautiful flower.)
  • පුත්තර ඔබ පුංචියක් ඇත්තේ නැත? (Do you have a beautiful flower?)

It is important to note that when using the adjective "පුත්තර" (beautiful), it must always come before the noun or pronoun it is describing.

Common Adjectives

Here is a list of some of the most common adjectives in Sinhala:

Conclusion

In this lesson, we have looked at how to use adjectives in Sinhala, as well as some of the most common adjectives. We have also discussed the placement of adjectives in Sinhala sentences. We hope that this lesson has helped you to gain a better understanding of adjectives in Sinhala.
