Irish Grammar - Adjectives

Hi Irish learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing adjectives in the Irish language. Adjectives are words that describe nouns and pronouns. They can be used to give more information about a person, place, thing, or idea. In this lesson, we will look at how to use adjectives in Irish, as well as some common examples.

Adjective Placement

In Irish, adjectives usually come after the noun they are describing. For example:

  • An bhean óg - The young woman
  • An teach mór - The big house

However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, when using the possessive adjectives "mo" (my) and "do" (your), they come before the noun. For example:

  • Mo charr - My car
  • Do bhean - Your woman

Adjective Agreement

Adjectives must agree with the noun they are describing in terms of gender and number. For example, if the noun is feminine, the adjective must also be feminine. If the noun is plural, the adjective must also be plural.

For example:

  • An bhean óg - The young woman
  • Na mná óga - The young women

Common Adjectives

Here are some common adjectives in Irish:

  • Álainn - Beautiful
  • Beag - Small
  • Bídeach - Brave
  • Dearfach - Positive
  • Díreach - Straight
  • Fuar - Cold
  • Gearr - Short
  • Glan - Clean
  • Go deas - Pretty
  • Gránna - Angry
  • Mór - Big
  • Neamhshuimiúil - Unusual
  • Nua - New
  • Óg - Young
  • Sásta - Happy
  • Slán - Safe
  • So-mhianaithe - Desirable
  • Trom - Heavy
