Haitian Grammar - Gender

Hi Haitian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about Haitian grammar and gender. We will look at the rules for gender in Haitian, as well as some examples and practice exercises. Let's get started!

Rules

In Haitian, nouns are either masculine or feminine. There is no neutral gender. The gender of a noun is usually determined by its ending. Nouns that end in -a are usually feminine, while nouns that end in -o are usually masculine. However, there are some exceptions to this rule.

For example, the word for "book" is "liv". Liv is a masculine noun, even though it ends in -a. Similarly, the word for "girl" is "ti fi", which is a feminine noun, even though it ends in -o.

It is important to note that the gender of a noun affects the form of the adjectives and verbs that are used with it. For example, if you are talking about a "beautiful girl", the adjective "bel" (beautiful) must be conjugated in the feminine form.

Examples

Haitian Pronunciation English Translation
ti fi /ti fi/ girl
