Thai Grammar - Nouns

Hi Thai learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the basics of Thai grammar related to nouns. We will cover topics such as noun gender, noun classes, and noun declension. By the end of this lesson, you will have a better understanding of how to use nouns in Thai.

Noun Gender

In Thai, nouns are either masculine or feminine. This is indicated by the ending of the word. Masculine nouns usually end with a consonant, while feminine nouns usually end with a vowel. For example, the word for 'teacher' is ครู (kruu) which is masculine, and the word for 'student' is นักเรียน (nak rian) which is feminine.

Noun Classes

Nouns can also be divided into different classes. These classes are based on the type of word they are derived from. For example, nouns derived from verbs are called กริยา (kriyaa), nouns derived from adjectives are called สรรพนาม (san pha nam), and nouns derived from other nouns are called สมุดทรัพย์ (somut sap).

Noun Declension

Nouns in Thai can also be declined to indicate various grammatical functions. For example, the word ครู (kruu) can be declined to ครู่ (kruu) to indicate the possessive form. Similarly, the word นักเรียน (nak rian) can be declined to นักเรียนของฉัน (nak rian kong chan) to indicate the possessive form.

Conclusion

In this lesson, we discussed the basics of Thai grammar related to nouns. We covered topics such as noun gender, noun classes, and noun declension. We hope that this lesson has helped you gain a better understanding of how to use nouns in Thai.
