Malayalam Grammar - Negation

Hi Malayalam learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about negation in Malayalam. Negation is the process of making a statement negative. It is an important part of Malayalam grammar and it is essential to understand how to use it correctly.

Negation in Malayalam is formed by adding the particle അല്ല (all) after the verb. This particle changes the meaning of the sentence from affirmative to negative. For example:

Malayalam Pronunciation English Translation
ഞാൻ കഴിയും nān kazhiyum I can
ഞാൻ കഴിയില്ല nān kazhiyilla I cannot

The particle അല്ല (all) can also be used to make a statement negative without changing the verb. For example:

Malayalam Pronunciation English Translation
അത് നിങ്ങളുടെ ആളുകളുടെ ആണ് atu ningalude ālukaleude āṇu That is yours
അത് നിങ്ങളുടെ ആളുകളുടെ അല്ല atu ningalude ālukaleude alla That is not yours

It is also possible to make a statement negative by using the particle മില്ലാതെ (millaathe). This particle is used to negate a statement without changing the verb. For example:

Malayalam Pronunciation English Translation
അത് നിങ്ങളുടെ ആളുകളുടെ ആണ് atu ningalude ālukaleude āṇu That is yours
അത് നിങ്ങളുടെ ആളുകളുടെ മില്ലാതെ atu ningalude ālukaleude millaathe That is not yours

It is important to note that the particle അല്ല (all) is used to make a statement negative, while the particle മില്ലാതെ (millaathe) is used to negate a statement.

Negation can also be used to ask questions. To do this, the particle അല്ല (all) is placed at the end of the sentence. For example:

Malayalam Pronunciation English Translation
നിങ്ങൾ കഴിയും ningal kazhiyum You can
നിങ്ങൾ കഴിയില്ലാ ningal kazhiyillaa Can you not?

Negation can also be used to make requests. To do this, the particle താഴെ (thāzhe) is placed at the end of the sentence. For example:

Malayalam Pronunciation English Translation
നിങ്ങൾ കഴിയും ningal kazhiyum You can
നിങ്ങൾ കഴിയില്ലാതെ താഴെ ningal kazhiyillaathe thāzhe Won't you please?

Negation can also be used to express surprise or disbelief. To do this, the particle എന്താ (enthā) is placed at the end of the sentence. For example:

Malayalam Pronunciation English Translation
നിങ്ങൾ കഴിയും ningal kazhiyum You can
നിങ്ങൾ കഴിയില്ലാതെ എന്താ ningal kazhiyillaathe enthā You can't?

Now that you have learned about negation in Malayalam, it is time to practice. To improve your Malayalam Grammar, you can also use the Polyglot Club website. Find native speakers and ask them any questions!
