Columns description

  • old: OLD LIST. language name in English. DO NOT CHANGE
  • old_lib: OLD LIST. autonym. DO NOT CHANGE
  • ISO_639-3: Why several codes per language? there can be only one code per language.
  • new: NEW LIST. MAIN language name in English. Length of this field should be short. WARNING: NOT EDITABLE in the future GrimPixel: Even little changes for languages with few users? It means to slowly examine and change something in that file.
  • update: 'break' or 'merge'
  • rename: 1 for yes.

Definitions

  • 'rename' : the language stays in the list but with a new name. users still have the language on their profile but with a new name. no database update is necessary.
  • 'merge' : the language is deleted from the list. users will have another already existing language on their profile. database update is necessary.
  • 'delete' : the same as 'merge', the language is deleted from the list. users will have another already existing language on their profile. database update is necessary.

List

  • When there is a 'break', I need to know which line is 'rename', if all new names are different from the old name. The line 'rename' must be the most spoken/common one. All users will receive this one on their profile
  • Risk of duplicate: Example: Nepali (individual language) and Nepali (macrolanguage) : the user will not know the difference. GrimPixel: I think there can be a checkbox to show macrolanguages, and it will be disabled when selecting "language you can teach" and "language you want to learn".vincent: we must have the same list everywhere, else it will complicate everything and change the whole website. Either we have only macro languages or we have individual languages
  • GrimPixel: When choosing which one to be renamed in "break", I choose individual languages, because macrolanguages will be disabled in "language you can teach" and "language you want to learn".
  • GrimPixel: Basing on the principle above, "break" is essentially "rename", to rename it to the most popular option, and ignore the other items. Vincent: OK
  • GrimPixel: I think "delete" can be "rename", too, to a relative or a similar item, to avoid being a blank in those users' profile. If those users haven't logged in for years, you can delete their accounts.Vincent: Yes good point! for 'delete', we do not 'rename' the language, it disappears from the list but is replaced by another language on the profile, so it's a 'merge'. We do not talk about deleting accounts here, it's another request GrimPixel: it's wierd. I think a blank can be better. And delete should be as few as possible, just like death penaulty.Vincent: there is no blank, it's just replaced by another language, we do not delete profile
