Animals in Nigeria[edit | edit source]

Nigeria is home to a diverse range of animal species, with mammals and birds being two major categories. The country's vast landscape offers a variety of habitats that support a wide range of mammals, including some of the most iconic African animals. Lions, leopards, hyenas, and African elephants are just a few examples of the majestic mammals found in Nigeria. The country is also home to several antelope species, such as waterbucks and giraffes, as well as smaller mammals like shrews, mice, rats, and squirrels. The pangolin, aardvark, and western gorilla are also found in Nigeria.

In addition to mammals, Nigeria is also a birdwatcher's paradise, with many unique bird species found across the country's diverse landscapes. Different geographical regions in Nigeria have their own typical bird species, with some being found in both forest and savannah. Waterfowl can be seen around Oba Dam, east of Ibadan, including several species of herons and egrets, African pygmy goose, crested jacana, black-winged stilt, Egyptian plover and crake. In the adjacent rainforest, visitors can spot specialties such as the square-tailed drongo and shiny-backed drongo, African oriole and black-headed oriole, painted snipe, several species of doves, Klaas's and Diederik's cuckoos, as well as kingfishers, bee-eaters, rollers and shrikes.

Overall, Nigeria's rich animal diversity makes it a fascinating destination for wildlife enthusiasts, offering the chance to witness some of Africa's most magnificent mammals and beautiful birds in their natural habitats.
