Istanbul, the capital of the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire, has many historic buildings. The Blue Mosque, founded by Mehmet Aga, is a fascinating example. This masterpiece of Ottoman architecture is a true gem. Covered with blue-green tiles and bouquets of flowers, it provides a magical show and call for spirituality.

Another scenic area of Istanbul is the Grand Bazaar. This is a huge market that brings together 4,000 stalls. unusual jewelry, spices and all kinds of typical handicrafts. Rare and beautiful carpets made by craftsmen with great dexterity are a delight for the eyes.

Ephesus[edit | edit source]

To discover an ancient Turkey, the Aegean region is the most appropriate. Located in the city of Izmir, Ephesus is one of the oldest cities of Asia Minor Greek. Roman ruins abound. You can see the column of the temple of Artemis, a remnant of the seventh wonder of the world, the ruins of the library of Celsius and the Odeon amphitheater.

Cappadocia[edit | edit source]

In Cappadocia, Göreme site looks like a lunar landscape due to erosion of the volcanic rock. Many churches, Christianity remains were dug there into the rock. The most spectacular are the Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise), the the Church of the Buckle (Tokalı Kilise) and the Apple Church (Elmalı Kilise). Biblical scenes of great beauty are painted on the rock.
