Åland Timeline[edit | edit source]

The autonomous province of Åland is located southwest of Finland. Åland is a demilitarized Swedish-speaking part of Finland. The landscape consists of over 6,700 islands, but the population, nowadays over 30,000 people, is only resident on 60 islands. More than 40 percent of Åland's population lives in Mariehamn, which is the only city with 16 municipalities in the province.

History of self-government[edit | edit source]

Like the rest of Finland, Åland has also been part of the Swedish Empire and in 1809, when Sweden was forced to hand over Finland and Åland to the Russian Empire, the province became part of the Grand Duchy of Finland.

When Finland became independent in 1917, representatives of the Åland municipalities decided to request that the province be reconnected to Sweden. Finland rejected the request and the Riksdag tried to solve the problem by enacting a law on Åland's autonomy in 1920.

The Ålanders refused to approve the law and since the position of the province seemed to lead to an open conflict between Finland and Sweden, they asked that the newly formed League of Nations resolve the conflict.

The League of Nations decided in 1921 that Åland would belong to Finland. Finland became obliged to guarantee the Swedish residents' Swedish-language culture, the Swedish language, local customs and self-government. Åland has been demilitarized since the Peace of Paris in 1856 after the Crimean War. When the League of Nations decided Åland's statehood in 1921, the demilitarization from 1856 was consolidated.

Åland was neutralized in the same convention. The demilitarization was consolidated in the Paris Peace of 1947.

The Act on Åland's Autonomy from 1920 has been amended in its entirety twice, in 1951 and 1993.

Åland's self-government 100 years[edit | edit source]

Åland's self-government turns 100 years old. Self-government is celebrated and noticed in several different ways. The province's anniversary year begins on 9 June 2021 and culminates in the parliament's 100th anniversary on 9 June 2022.

The Government Offices participate in the festivities during the anniversary year and arrange events and events in collaboration with the province's anniversary organization and other actors. The system of self-government is made visible not only at national events but also internationally at Finnish missions around the world.
