Culture[edit | edit source]
Brazil[edit | edit source]
Brazilians are very religious, Christians for a large majority: Christmas (Natal) therefore remains a major holiday here. This is an opportunity to get together with the family over a good dinner. For ceia (dinner) in Natal, turkey (peru) remains the dish of choice. Then, you will find many nativity scenes, some of which are alive. Midnight mass is also a very popular celebration.
Portugal[edit | edit source]
Tradition has it that at Christmas Portuguese families get together on December 24 for dinner and cod dishes are served. Some times, depending on the country region the dishes served may vary (roast turkey or kid, octopus dishes or others) and leftovers are usually eaten on following days (like "roupa velha"). For dessert, you cannot miss the Bolo-Rei, filled and garnished with candied and dried fruit, in addition to other characteristic cakes of the season such as the Broas Castelares and traditional fried pastries like filhós, sonhos and rabanadas.
All that was said above about family and religious traditions stands true for Portugal as well. Just in a much smaller scale.
