Basic Grammar[edit | edit source]

Before we dive into expressing opinions, let's first review some basic grammar rules in Modern Greek (1453-):

Nouns[edit | edit source]

Nouns in Modern Greek (1453-) have gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural). Most feminine nouns end in -η, and most masculine nouns end in -ος. To make a noun plural, you usually add -ες or -α at the end of the word. For example:

Modern Greek (1453-) Pronunciation English
καφές (masculine) kafés coffee
καφετέρια (feminine) kafetería coffee shop
καφέδες (plural) kafédes coffees
καφετέριες (plural) kafeteríes coffee shops

Verbs[edit | edit source]

Verbs are actions or states of being, and they change according to tense (present, past, future), mood (indicative, subjunctive, imperative), and person (first, second, third).

Here's an example dialogue to illustrate how to use verbs in context:

  • Person 1: Πίνω καφέ το πρωί. (Píno kafé to proí.) (I drink coffee in the morning.)
  • Person 2: Ναι, εγώ πίνω τσάι το απόγευμα. (Ne, egó píno tsái to apógevma.) (Yes, I drink tea in the afternoon.)

Adjectives[edit | edit source]

Adjectives describe or provide more information about nouns. In Modern Greek (1453-), adjectives usually follow the noun, and they have to agree with the gender and the number of the noun they describe. For example:

Modern Greek (1453-) Pronunciation English
μεγάλος/μεγάλη/μεγάλο (masculine/feminine/neuter) megalós/megalí/megaló big
μικρός/μικρή/μικρό (masculine/feminine/neuter) mikrós/mikrí/mikró small

Expressing Your Opinion[edit | edit source]

Now that we've covered some basic grammar rules let's move on to expressing your opinion in Modern Greek (1453-).

The most common way to express your opinion or preference is by using the verb θέλω (thélo) which means "I want." Here's an example dialogue:

  • Person 1: Τι θέλεις να πιείς; (Ti théleis na piís?) (What do you want to drink?)
  • Person 2: Θέλω έναν καφέ με γάλα. (Thélo énan kafé me gála.) (I want a coffee with milk.)

Another way to express your opinion is by using the verb αρέσει (arései), which means "I like." For example:

  • Person 1: Σου αρέσει η τούρτα; (Su arései i toúrta?) (Do you like the cake?)
  • Person 2: Ναι, μου αρέσει πολύ! (Ne, mou arései polý!) (Yes, I like it a lot!)

You can also use the phrase δεν μου αρέσει (den mou arései) to express that you dislike something. For example:

  • Person 1: Σου αρέσει η σοκολάτα; (Su arései i sokoláta?) (Do you like chocolate?)
  • Person 2: Δεν μου αρέσει ιδιαίτερα. (Den mou arései idiátera.) (I don't like it very much.)

Using adjectives is another way to express your opinion. For example:

  • Person 1: Πώς είναι ο καφές; (Pos íne o kafés?) (How is the coffee?)
  • Person 2: Είναι πολύ νόστιμος! (Íne polý nóstimos!) (It's very tasty!)

Interesting Facts[edit | edit source]
