English: Narrative voice[edit | edit source]

Narrative utterances support a story, namely a plot and characters located in a space-time universe. There are no narrative utterances without narration, without narrative enunciation. Who is speaking? What is the status of the voice which is at the origin of the stories, which is responsible for the narrative utterances? Under the term "the narrative voice" in a work, there is a series of questions which concern, in a general way, the relations and the necessary distinctions that should be established between these three instances of author, narrator and character. We must always distinguish between author and narrator. What happens when the narrator is at the same time a character in the story he is telling? Level questions, then: how to define the relationships and the borders between the inside and the outside of the worlds told? Finally, questions of temporality, when we measure the greater or lesser gap between the time of the narrative act and the moment when the story takes place.

What are the Different Types of Narrative Voice?

First-person[edit | edit source]

The first-person perspective is created when the narrative is told by someone within the story, such as the protagonist.

The pronouns 'I', 'my,' and 'we' are common features of the first-person narrative voice.

'I kicked the football with all my might, aiming at the goal. I felt anxious as I watched it arc towards the net. I felt my heart stop as the goalie dived...and missed! The crowd erupted in applause.'

Second-person[edit | edit source]

Stories written in the second-person perspective make use of the pronouns ‘you’ and ‘your.’ It’s not commonly used by authors in storytelling.

'You kick the football with all your might, aiming at the goal. You feel anxious as you watch it arc towards the net.

You feel your heart stop as the goalie dives...and misses! The crowd erupts in applause.'

Third-person[edit | edit source]

The third-person perspective relies on the narrative being told by someone outside of the story being told.

They tell the story as an observer. Pronouns include 'he', 'she', and 'they'.

'Max kicked the football with all his might, aiming at the goal. He felt anxious as he watched it arc towards the net.

Max felt his heart stop as the goalie dived...and missed! The crowd erupted in applause.'

Third-person omniscient[edit | edit source]

An omniscient (all-seeing and all-knowing) narrator is aware of things that the characters in the story are not.

In these narratives, facts can be provided about other characters and events outside of the story to help develop a broader picture.

'Max kicked the football with all his might, aiming at the goal. He felt anxious as he watched it arc towards the net.

Years later, the man stood behind the goal would describe it to his grandchildren as one of the best kicks he had ever witnessed.'

Conclusion[edit | edit source]

The narrative voice is not the author's voice. It is created by the author, just like the plot.

She can confine herself to stating the sentences of the story.

It can also comment, judge, or delegate its function to an actor of the diegesis.

Always, it is identifiable thanks to deictic expressions or to the marks of subjectivity.

Français : La voix narrative[edit | edit source]
