tā it - Mandarin Chinese

Definition[edit | edit source]

Radical is 宀 mián “roof.” This radical is referred to colloquially as 宝盖头 (寶蓋 頭) băogàitóu “top made up of a canopy.” The part that is under the “roof” is 匕 bĭ, which is a type of ancient spoon, an object, so we could say that “it” 它 is under the “roof” 宀. The whole character 它 can serve as a phonetic, e.g., in the character 鸵 (鴕), which is used in the word 鸵鸟 (鴕鳥) tuóniăo “ostrich.” Distinguish 它 from 他 tā “he” and 她 tā “she”.

Examples[edit | edit source]

  • 它 tā it [PR]
  • 别管它! (別管它!) Bié guăn ta! “Don’t concern yourself with it!”
  • 把它放在这儿吧。 (把它放在這兒吧。) Bă ta fàngzai zhèr ba. “Put it here.”
