Mammals of Macedonia[edit | edit source]
The mountains of western Macedonia are home to large mammals, such as wolves, bears and lynx. The latter is considered the national animal but it is extremely difficult to observe. Macedonia has less than 100 lynxes, and between 160 and 200 brown bears. Wolves are still found in all regions and hunting is permitted. There are 1,000 to 1,200 of them. North Macedonia is part of the habitat of the golden jackal, but it seems to have disappeared from the country.
The mountains of Macedonia are also the refuge of more common species, such as wild boar, deer, marten and chamois.
North Macedonia has its own breed of dog, the Ε arplaninec (pronounced βcharplaninetsβ). Originally from the mountains bordering Kosovo, it is a sheepdog with very thick hair.
