Definite Article[edit | edit source]

Like in English, where we have only one definite article β€œthe", in Macedonian it is same but the article changes in accordance with the gender of the noun.

  • -ΠΎΡ‚, -ΠΎΠ², -ΠΎΠ½ (masculine singular), ΠΌΠ°ΠΆΠΎΡ‚, ΠΌΠ°ΠΆΠΎΠ², ΠΌΠ°ΠΆΠΎΠ½  (the man, this man, that man)
  • -Ρ‚Π°, -Π²Π°, -Π½Π° (feminine singular) ΠΊΡƒΡœΠ°Ρ‚Π°, ΠΊΡƒΡœΠ°Π²Π°, ΠΊΡƒΡœΠ°Π½Π° (the house, this house, that house)
  • -Ρ‚ΠΎ, -Π²ΠΎ, -Π½ΠΎ (neuter singular) Π΄Π΅Ρ‚Π΅Ρ‚ΠΎ, Π΄Π΅Ρ‚Π΅Π²ΠΎ, Π΄Π΅Ρ‚Π΅Π½ΠΎ (the child, this child, that child)
  • -Ρ‚Π΅ (Ρ‚ΠΈ), -Π²Π΅ (Π²ΠΈ), -Π½Π΅ (Π½ΠΈ) (plural) ΠΊΡƒΡœΠΈΡ‚Π΅, ΠΊΡƒΡœΠΈΠ²Π΅, ΠΊΡƒΡœΠΈΠ½Π΅ (the houses, these houses, those houses)
  • The suffixes -ΠΎΠ², -Π²Π°, -Π²ΠΎ, -Π²Π΅ (Π²ΠΈ) are used when the subjects (and persons) are near the speaker. Π”Π°Ρ˜ ΠΌΠΈ ја ΠΊΠ½ΠΈΠ³Π°Π²Π° - Give me this book.
  • The suffixes β€“ΠΎΠ½, -Π½Π°, -Π½ΠΎ, -Π½Π΅ (Π½ΠΈ) are used when the subjects (and persons) are far from the speaker. Π”Π°Ρ˜ ΠΌΠΈ ја ΠΊΠ½ΠΈΠ³Π°Π½Π° - Give me that book.

Indefinite Article[edit | edit source]

While we have (a / an ; some) in English as indefinite articles, we also have Π΅Π΄Π΅Π½/Π΅Π΄Π½Π°/Π΅Π΄Π½ΠΎ; Π½Π΅ΠΊΠΎΠ»ΠΊΡƒ in Macedonian.

In general, whenever (a, an) are used in English you don’t need to use (Π΅Π΄Π΅Π½, Π΅Π΄Π½ΠΎ) or (Π΅Π΄Π½Π°) to say the equivalent in Macedonian.

Π•Π΄Π΅Π½, Π΅Π΄Π½Π°, Π΅Π΄Π½ΠΎ are used as a substitution for a/an only when a/an are used with the meaning of "one".

The Macedonian equivalent of "some" is Π½Π΅ΠΊΠΎΠ»ΠΊΡƒ.

  • ΠΊΠ½ΠΈΠ³Π° (a book)
  • ΠΊΡƒΡœΠ° (a house)
  • Π½Π΅ΠΊΠΎΠ»ΠΊΡƒ ΠΊΠ½ΠΈΠ³ΠΈ (some books)
  • Π½Π΅ΠΊΠΎΠ»ΠΊΡƒ ΠΊΡƒΡœΠΈ (some houses)
  • Example: ΠšΠ½ΠΈΠ³ΠΈΡ‚Π΅ ΠΊΠΎΠΈ Π³ΠΈ ΠΈΠΌΠ°ΠΌ сС Π²ΠΎ ΠΊΡƒΡœΠ° Π½Π° Π΅Π΄Π΅Π½ ΠΏΡ€ΠΈΡ˜Π°Ρ‚Π΅Π». (The books I have are in a house of a friend)
