Expressing Agreement[edit | edit source]
When we agree with something, we often use the word "yes" or "yeah" in English. However, in Kirghiz, there are a few different ways to express agreement:

Let's see these phrases in action:
- Person 1: Бул кыргызча макаланы окугандайсыңбы? (Bul kırğızcha makalanı okugandaysınbı? - Did you read this Kirghiz article?)
- Person 2: Ооба, мен окугандайм. (Ooba, men okugandaym. - Yes, I read it.)
- Person 1: Менин сүйүүмдү катар? (Menin sűyűűmdy katar? - Do you agree with me?)
- Person 2: Мончо, сиздин сүйүүңүздү дүйнөгүмгө караганда. (Moncho, sizdin sűyűűnzdü düynögümğö karaganda. - Sure, I see your point.)
- Person 1: Бул фильм жакшы эмес. (Bul fil'm zhak-shı emes. - This movie is not good.)
- Person 2: Жакшы, мен де бул фильмди жакшы эмес емесмин. (Zhak-shı, men de bul fil'mdi zhak-shı emes emesmin. - Good, I don't think this movie is good either.)
As you can see, each of these phrases can be used interchangeably to express agreement in different situations.
Expressing Disagreement[edit | edit source]
If we disagree with something, we often say "no" or "I don't think so" in English. In Kirghiz, there are a few different ways to express disagreement:

Let's see these phrases in action:
- Person 1: Бул ертеңги афиша эми? (Bul ertengi afisha emi? - Is this the poster for tomorrow?)
- Person 2: Жоо, бул соңго афиша. (Jo-o, bul songo afisha. - No, this is the poster for the weekend.)
- Person 1: Сизге аралашып жүргүнүңүздү караганда, биз кандай жокомиз. (Sizge aralaşyp jürgünüzdy karaganda, biz kanday jokomiz. - When we compare ourselves to you, we are nothing.)
- Person 2: Жалқау, сиз курбаныңыздын салыгына барбыз. (Jal-kau, siz kurbanıñyızdyn salığına barbyz. - I disagree, we value your sacrifice.)
- Person 1: Сиз бата болдуңуз ба? (Siz bata bolduñuz ba? - Did you win?)
- Person 2: Берп берүү, бата болбойм (Berp berüü, bata bolboyım. - I refuse to answer, I didn't win.)
Again, each of these phrases can be used interchangeably to express disagreement in different situations. Remember that tone and context are also important when conveying the meaning of these phrases.
Asking for Opinion[edit | edit source]
Now that we know how to express our own opinions and disagreements, let's focus on asking for others' opinions. Asking for opinions is a great way to show interest and engagement in a conversation. Here are a few ways to ask for opinions in Kirghiz:

Let's see these phrases in action:
- Person 1: Сизимде ошондой сан болуп жатат, жакшы миндеттүү болот. (Sizimde oshondoy san bolup jatat, zhak-shı mindettüü bolot. - There seems to be a lot on our plate, we should prioritize.)
- Person 2: Сиз үнөнү үйрөнүбү? (Siz ünönü üyronüby? - Do you agree with me?)
- Person 1: Бугуна камара көзүмдү карапалымды гана жакшы көрүнүп жатат. (Buguna kamara kőzűmdy karapalymdy gana zhak-shı körünüp jatat. - Today, I only see the world through tunnel vision.)
- Person 2: Сен кандай карагачысың? (Sen kanday karagachysyn? - What do you see?)
Asking these questions is a great way to start meaningful conversations and understand others' perspectives. Remember to actively listen and engage with the other person!
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
To put these phrases into context, let's see a dialogue between two people:
- Person 1: Менин карашым? (Menin karashym? - What do you think of my outfit?)
- Person 2: Жакшы болуп жатат, бирок сендей кийин жоболуу көргөзөм. (Zhak-shı bolup jatat, birok sendey kiyn joboluu körğözöm. - It looks good, but I would suggest adding a scarf like yours afterwards.)
- Person 1: Албатта, сиз окулгандай көрө берет. (Albatta, siz okulganday körü beret. - Of course, you always look so put together.)
- Person 2: Миндеттүү болбоп, силердин катарыңызды жакшы корсотууга сыяктуу чечимдер анын бир эсебинин болуп жатышы мүмкүн. (Mindettüü bolbop, sillerdin katarıñyzdy zhak-shı korsotuuga siyaktoo chechimder anyn bir esebinin bolup jatyshy mümkün. - Not necessary, showing off little things like how you both dress shows how much attention to detail you both have.)
In this dialogue, the two individuals share compliments and opinions on each other's outfits. Notice how they use phrases we learned earlier to express agreement and ask for opinions.
