ItalianGrammar0 to A1 Course → Futuro Semplice

In the previous lesson, we learned about the Passato Prossimo tense in Italian. We learned how to conjugate regular and irregular verbs in the past tense and how to use this tense to talk about completed actions in the past. In this lesson, we will continue our journey through Italian verb tenses and focus on the Futuro Semplice tense.

What is the Futuro Semplice tense?[edit | edit source]

The Futuro Semplice tense, also known as the Simple Future tense, is used to talk about actions that will happen in the future. It is one of the most commonly used tenses in Italian and is relatively easy to form. In this lesson, we will learn how to conjugate regular and irregular verbs in the Futuro Semplice tense and explore some common uses of this tense in everyday Italian.

Forming the Futuro Semplice tense[edit | edit source]

To form the Futuro Semplice tense, we need to use the infinitive form of the verb and add specific endings to it. The endings are the same for all three conjugations (-are, -ere, and -ire verbs) and are as follows:

- For -are verbs:

 * Io -erò
 * Tu -erai
 * Lui/lei -erà
 * Noi -eremo
 * Voi -erete
 * Loro -eranno

- For -ere verbs:

 * Io -erò
 * Tu -erai
 * Lui/lei -erà
 * Noi -eremo
 * Voi -erete
 * Loro -eranno

- For -ire verbs:

 * Io -irò
 * Tu -irai
 * Lui/lei -irà
 * Noi -iremo
 * Voi -irete
 * Loro -iranno

Let's take a look at some examples:

- Parlare (to speak):

 * Io parlerò (I will speak)
 * Tu parlerai (You will speak)
 * Lui/lei parlerà (He/she will speak)
 * Noi parleremo (We will speak)
 * Voi parlerete (You all will speak)
 * Loro parleranno (They will speak)

- Scrivere (to write):

 * Io scriverò (I will write)
 * Tu scriverai (You will write)
 * Lui/lei scriverà (He/she will write)
 * Noi scriveremo (We will write)
 * Voi scriverete (You all will write)
 * Loro scriveranno (They will write)

- Dormire (to sleep):

 * Io dormirò (I will sleep)
 * Tu dormirai (You will sleep)
 * Lui/lei dormirà (He/she will sleep)
 * Noi dormiremo (We will sleep)
 * Voi dormirete (You all will sleep)
 * Loro dormiranno (They will sleep)

As you can see, the endings are added directly to the infinitive form of the verb. It's important to note that there are no stem changes or irregularities in the formation of the Futuro Semplice tense for regular verbs. However, there are some irregular verbs that have unique conjugations in this tense, which we will explore later in this lesson.

The Futuro Semplice tense is used to talk about actions that will happen in the future. Here are some common uses of this tense:

1. Expressing future actions:

  * Domani andrò al cinema. (Tomorrow I will go to the cinema.)
  * La settimana prossima partiranno per le vacanze. (Next week they will leave for vacation.)

2. Making predictions or expressing future probabilities:

  * Credo che saranno felici insieme. (I think they will be happy together.)

 * Io sarò (I will be)
 * Tu sarai (You will be)
 * Lui/lei sarà (He/she will be)
 * Noi saremo (We will be)

 * Lui/lei farà (He/she will do/make)
