Those 28 German lessons for advanced levels have been written by Hector Tormos, real polyglot and member of the Polyglot Club community since 2014. The lessons are presented much like Assimil, with German text, English translation, audio and annotations. They concern the levels C1 or C2 (proficient).

ERSTE LEKTION passt dieser Kurs zu mir? 1 - Liebe Lernende, Haben Sie bereits die Angst vor Sätzen mit Nebensätzen, indirekten Fragen und komplizierten Formulierungen verloren, Ihnen fehlt aber immer noch das Vokabular und die Praxis, um wie ein Muttersprachler zu sprechen? 2 - Wollen sie weiterhin Ihre Deutschkenntnisse mit echten, nützlichen, historischen Texte erweitern, aber Sie haben nicht die nötige Motivation und Zeit, um diese Texte selbst ausfindig zu machen? 3- Wollen Sie zudem Ihr Wissen über Deutschland und die deutschsprachige Welt ausbauen, um Weiteres über das, was ist und das, was war, zu lernen und dabei die Herkunft von Wörtern wie "Dachshaarpinsel" oder "Heinzelmännchen" zu entdecken? 4 - Sind Sie bereit, die Lektionen wöchentlich oder zumindest monatlich zu wiederholen, sodass sich diese einprägen, um das maximale Ergebnis in kürzester Zeit zu erreichen? 5 - Haben Sie bisher so viel verstanden, dass Sie mithilfe von Übersetzungen und Anmerkungen in der Lage sind, bislang unbekannte Wörter zu verstehen, und sind Sie dennoch nicht so entmutigt, dass Sie die Pausetaste drücken und das Dokument schließen wollen? 6 - Falls dies auf Sie zutrifft, machen Sie sich eine Tasse Kaffee und lehnen Sie zurück: dieser Kurs passt zu Ihnen.

FIRST LESSON Is this course for me? 1 - Dear learners, Have you already lost the fear of sentences with subordinate clauses, indirect questions and complicated wording, but you still lack the vocabulary and the practice to speak as a native? 2 - Do you want to take further your German skills by way of real, useful and historical texts, but you have not the necessary motivation and time to find these texts for yourself? 3 - Furthermore, do you want to extend your knowledge about Germany and the German-speaking world, and to learn more about that which is and that which was and, thereby, discover the origin of words like "Dachshaarpinsel" or "Heinzelmännchen"? 4 - Are you prepared to review the lessons weekly or, at least, monthly, so that they imprint and, thus, you can get the best result in the shortest time? 5 - Have you so far understood so much that you are able, with the help of translations and annotations, to understand hitherto unknown words, and are you nevertheless not so discouraged that you want to press the pause-button or close the (text) document? 6 - If this applies to you, prepare yourself a cup of coffee and lean back: this course is for you.

• A less prosaic Ok! could "zupasst" as a translation as well sometimes

• Meaning "lawful, pertaining to the law" up until MLG, its use popped out of the legal sphere around the 13th c. Cf. w/ Echtheit (f): authenticity. Cogn. w/ Ehe (f) marriage and DU eeuw (now meaning "century"), stemming from P-G *aiwaz (law, custom), fr. PIE *h₂eyu- (vital force) and thus also cogn. w/ LAT aevum and the POR, ITA and SPA descendant evo
• Echt exists both in DU and ENG with the same meaning

• Ausfindig is an adverbial form of ausfinden: to find out.

Heinzelmännchen "little house gnomes" fr. Cologne

• The Heinzelmännchen allegedly did every house's housework during the night so that citizens could devote the day to more interesting things, until a woman (not Pandora, not Eva, but a tailor's wife) tried to spy on the gnomes' labour, infuriating them to their literal point of no return. A historical (?) account is to be found on a famous poem that begins Wie war zu Cölln es doch vordem / Mit Heinzelmännchen so bequem! (Time ago, in Cologne, / So comfortable with the

einzelmännchen it was!)

einprägen to imprint (both in literal and figurative sense)

• Syn. eindrücken, einpressen

Cf. w/ prägen (to mint, to characterize), Prägung (f, coinage, imprinting)

• To be used as synonyms for our practical purposes. Also in the repertoire we could have bis jetzt, bis dato (PS2) and the adverb bisherig
• Der bisherige Käsegrundpreis bleibt unverändert

The base price for cheese (that we have had up until now) remains unchanged

• Auf sich selbst und sein Wirken gestellt, säkularisiert der Mensch die gesamte bisherige Geschichte

To face himself and his deeds, men secularized the whole of history (up until now)

zutreffen to be right, to correspond with the facts

• Diese Vermutung hat sich jedoch nicht bewahrheitet, obwohl sie in einigen Fällen zutrifft

This assumption has not proven true, although it is true in some cases

• Der Titel Zwei Frauen wäre für seinen Film ebenso zutreffend

The title Two Women would be just as fitting for his film

• Zutreffen is frequently a synonym of passen (cf. with the lesson's title), hinkommen and stimmen
