INTRODUCTION[edit | edit source]

In the French language, there are many words with identical phonetics but different in meaning and spelling. Those words are called homophones.

This is the case of:

  • METS
  • MET
  • MES
  • MAIS


For a better understanding of this course, it seems essential to define the meaning of these expressions.

EXPLANATIONS[edit | edit source]

METS[edit | edit source]

Refers to a dish, therefore food.

  • Exemple : Chaque week-end tante Aline apprend les recettes de nouveaux mets.

Every weekend Aunt Aline learns the recipes for new meals.

MET[edit | edit source]

This is the conjugation of the verb METTRE in the third person singular.

  • Exemple: Alphonse met sa chemise bleue.

Alphonse puts his blue shirt.

MES[edit | edit source]

Possessive adjective

  • Exemple : Je range mes cahiers.

I put away my notebooks.

MAIS[edit | edit source]

Coordinating conjunction marking the opposition

  • Exemple: Les élèves sont en vacances mais les étudiants continuent les cours.

The students are on vacation but the students continue their lessons.
