There are many ways to say "Good Bye" in French. Here are the main ones:

Informal[edit | edit source]

Salut ![edit | edit source]

Formal (when you will perhaps meet again)[edit | edit source]

Au revoir ![edit | edit source]

Formal (when you will never see that person again)[edit | edit source]

Adieu ![edit | edit source]

Informal (when you will perhaps meet again)[edit | edit source]

A plus ! / A plus tard ![edit | edit source]

"à plus" or "à plus tard" is used when it is safe, or very likely, that people will meet again in the same day (or evening), but the time and conditions are not necessarily agreed.

A la prochaine ![edit | edit source]

"A la prochaine !" is generally used with friends, or when we are sure that there will be a "next" when the conditions of a new meeting are uncertain.

Formal/Informal (adding a temporal precision, when you will meet that person again)[edit | edit source]

A demain ![edit | edit source]

See you tomorrow

A tout à l'heure ![edit | edit source]

"A tout à l'heure !" refers to a particular moment (in the hours that follow) that the interlocutors know how to identify. It is not necessarily very precise. For example, it may be "the moment I come back after doing what I have to do".

A bientôt ![edit | edit source]

"A bientôt !" insists that we hope to see our interlocutors again soon (it may be a real feeling or a polite mark of attention). In particular it is appropriate when it is not at all obvious that a new meeting takes place, in this case it can be followed by "I hope".

A tout de suite ![edit | edit source]

You are with someone, you have to leave for a short while and you come back almost immediately. Whereas you can say "à tout de suite" to someone on the phone for instance because you've just agreed to meet a few minutes later.

A très vite ![edit | edit source]

Formal (adding a wish)[edit | edit source]

Bonne journée ![edit | edit source]

Bonsoir/Bonne soirée ![edit | edit source]

Bon week-end ![edit | edit source]

Bon après-midi ![edit | edit source]

Bon voyage[edit | edit source]

Bon retour[edit | edit source]
