"Bar" is a masculine noun and can be:

"Le bar": a liquor store[edit | edit source]

  • Example: Il s’est arrêté dans un bar pour se désaltérer.

He stopped at a bar to quench his thirst.

"Le bar": the bar counter[edit | edit source]

  • Example: Il s’est installé au bar pour commander une limonade.

He sat down at the bar to order a lemonade.

"Un bar": a fish[edit | edit source]

  • Example: Il aurait bien mangé du bar mais l’établissement ne servait que des boissons.

He would have eaten at the bar but the establishment only served drinks.

"Le bar": the unit of pressure measurement[edit | edit source]

  • Example: La pression préconisée pour le gonflage des pneus se situe entre deux et trois bars.

The recommended tire inflation pressure is between two and three bars.

Une barre[edit | edit source]

Barre is a feminine noun meaning:

"Un barre": a long, narrow object[edit | edit source]

  • Example: Le secret du bonheur : une barre de chocolat à toute heure.

The secret of happiness: a bar of chocolate at any time.

"La barre": where you testify in court[edit | edit source]

  • Example: Il a été appelé à la barre.

He was called to the stand.
