Homophones[edit | edit source]

  • confusion between :
    • "ce livre" (demonstrative adjective : this book)
    • "se marier" (personal pronoun used as the object complement of a verb, get married)
  • confusion between maire (mayor), mer (sea) and mère (mother)
  • confusion between :
    • haut (high), 
    • eau (water), 
    • au début (at the begining), 
    • les os (bones)
    • Ô combien (particle used to invoke, apostrophy and indicate the elation of a feeling).
  • confusion between seau (bucket), saut (jump), sot (dumb), and sceau (seal)
  • confusion between ça (this) and sa (her)
  • confusion between :
    • c'est beau (it's nice),
    • il s'est habitué (he has been used to it),
    • ces livres (these books) : attention : "ces" se prononcent [cé] et non [cè]
    • je sais (I know),
    • elle sait (she knows)

Do not write:

  • companie but compagnie
  • connection but connexion
  • correspondence but correspondance
  • dance but danse
  • default but défaut
  • example but exemple
  • language but langage
  • license but licence
  • exercise but exercice

1 consonant instead of 2[edit | edit source]

Do not write:

  • apartement but appartement
  • apartenir but appartenir (to belong)
  • corolaire but corollaire
  • envelope but enveloppe

2 consonants instead of 1[edit | edit source]

Do not write:

  • ballade (a kind of song, as in English) but balade (a walk)
  • abbréviation but abréviation
  • addresse but adresse
  • aggrégation but agrégation
  • aggression but agression
  • ammener but amener
  • appercevoir but apercevoir
  • courrir but courir
  • baggage but bagage
  • gallerie but galerie
  • giraffe but girafe
  • marriage but mariage
  • traffic but trafic

"-é" instead of "-er"[edit | edit source]

Do not write:

  • "Il faut aller mangé" but "Il faut aller manger"

Rule : When two verbs follow each other, the second takes "ER" ( plus généralement l'infintif ex : je vais aller courir )

"-er" instead or "-é"

Do not write:

  • "J'ai manger" but "J'ai mangé"

No final "-e"[edit | edit source]

Do not write:

  • "Util" but "Utile" (useful)
