French Grammar - Use of the definite article with quantities

Where English uses 'so much a pound', French refers to tant la livre/le kilo, etc.:

  • Les pommes? C'est 4,50 € le kilo

Apples? They are 4.50 € a kilo

  • Les bonbons sont à 5,40 € les 100 grammes

Sweets are 5.40 euros for a 100 grammes

  • Ces chaises sont vendues à 500 € la pièce (or 500 € pièce)

These chairs are sold for 500 euros each
