Possessive Case in Czech
Possessive Case

Here's a lesson on the possessive case in Czech:

The possessive case is used in Czech to show ownership or possession of something. In English, it's often indicated by adding an apostrophe and the letter "s." In Czech, the possessive case is formed by adding a suffix to the noun or adjective.

To form the possessive case in Czech, you need to know the gender and number of the noun you want to show possession for. Here are the possessive suffixes for each gender:

Examples[edit | edit source]

  • "Petr" is a masculine singular noun, so the possessive suffix is "-ův."

Míšin obchod. (Misha's shop.)[edit | edit source]

  • "Míša" is a feminine singular name, so the possessive suffix is "-in."

Dítě je šťastné ve svém domově. (The child is happy in its home.)[edit | edit source]

  • "Dítě" is a neuter singular noun, so the possessive suffix is "-ovo."

Rodiče mají rádi své děti. (Parents love their children.)[edit | edit source]

  • "Rodiče" is a masculine plural noun, so the possessive suffix is "-ův" or "-ejší" depending on the noun.

Ženy mají mnoho svých vlastních zájmů. (Women have many of their own interests.)[edit | edit source]

  • "Ženy" is a feminine plural noun, so the possessive suffix is "-in" or "-en" depending on the noun.

Studenti mají svá vlastní rozhodnutí. (Students have their own decisions.)[edit | edit source]

  • "Studenti" is a masculine plural noun, so the possessive suffix is "-ův" or "-ejší" depending on the noun.

It's important to note that the possessive case can be used with both nouns and adjectives, and that the suffix changes based on the gender and number of the word. With practice, you'll become more comfortable using the possessive case and communicating effectively in Czech.
