Adjectives in Czech

How to use Adjectives in Czech[edit | edit source]

Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns. In Czech, adjectives agree in gender, number, and case with the noun they modify. Here's what you need to know about adjectives in Czech:

Gender agreement[edit | edit source]

Czech nouns are either masculine, feminine, or neuter, and the adjective must agree with the gender of the noun it modifies. For example:

  • Modrý dům (masculine) - blue house
  • Modrá košile (feminine) - blue shirt
  • Modré auto (neuter) - blue car

Number agreement[edit | edit source]

Czech nouns are either singular or plural, and the adjective must agree with the number of the noun it modifies. For example:

  • Starý dům (singular) - old house
  • Staré domy (plural) - old houses

Case agreement[edit | edit source]

Czech nouns have different cases, and the adjective must agree with the case of the noun it modifies. The most common cases are nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, and vocative. For example:

  • Krásný dům (nominative) - beautiful house
  • Krásného domu (genitive) - of the beautiful house
  • Krásnému domu (dative) - to the beautiful house
  • Krásný dům (accusative) - beautiful house
  • Krásný dome (vocative) - beautiful house

Placement[edit | edit source]

In Czech, adjectives usually come after the noun they modify. For example:

  • Dům je modrý (The house is blue)
  • Auto je rychlé (The car is fast)

However, in some cases, such as with certain adjectives like "krásný" (beautiful), the adjective may come before the noun. For example:

  • Krásná květina (beautiful flower)
  • Krásné auto (beautiful car)

Comparison[edit | edit source]

Czech adjectives can be compared, just like in English. There are three degrees of comparison: positive, comparative, and superlative. Here's how to form them:

  • Positive: krásný (beautiful)
  • Comparative: krásnější (more beautiful)
  • Superlative: nejkrásnější (most beautiful)

Remember that adjectives in Czech must agree in gender, number, and case with the noun they modify. With these rules and some practice, you'll be able to use adjectives in Czech with ease!
