Croatian Months[edit | edit source]

The Croatian months follow the Gregorian calendar but deviate from the original Latin names commonly used in many Western countries. These names stem from archaic Slavic words and phrases, capturing poetic glimpses into the changing of the seasons and the various tasks these seasons demand.

January siječanj from cutting or hewing wood This month marks the period when wood is commonly cut in preparation for the cold months. It signifies the importance of resource preparation in traditional Croatian culture.
February veljača month in which days become longer The name reflects the natural change, emphasizing the anticipation of Spring and longer daylight hours.
March ožujak lying month Traditionally viewed as a deceptive month where weather could change suddenly. This perception underscores the unpredictable nature of early Spring in Croatia.
April travanj from growing grass As the fields turn green, April marks the beginning of the agricultural season. The name reflects the natural growth and renewal.
May svibanj from budding Cornel tree Cornel trees are common and their budding in May is a marker of the arrival of late Spring or early Summer.
June lipanj from linden tree Linden trees blossom in June and are culturally significant, often used in folklore and traditional medicine.
July srpanj from reaping with a sickle This is the month of the wheat harvest, underlining the agricultural cycles that are key in traditional Croatian life.
August kolovoz from driving a wagon (for harvest) Signifies the full swing of the harvest season, where wagons are often used to gather and store crops.
September rujan from an archaic verb for deer roaring Named for the deer mating season, symbolizing the richness of Croatian fauna.
October listopad from falling leaves Captures the essence of Autumn, as October is when leaves typically begin to fall.
November studeni from cold As the name suggests, November marks the arrival of colder temperatures and the onset of winter.
December prosinac the beginning of the Sun's shining Reflecting the Winter Solstice, the name anticipates the return of longer days, bringing hope for the new year.
  • Note: Croatians often refer to months informally by number, e.g. "prvi" (short version of prvi mjesec - first month, i.e. January), "drugi" (second month, February), "treći" (third month, March).

The naming of the months in Croatian not only reflects the country's deep connection to nature and agricultural practices but also serves as an echo of ancient wisdom, highlighting the interplay between human activity and the natural world.
