Ordinal Numbers in Catalan

Ordinal numbers are used to indicate the position or order of something in a series, such as first, second, third, etc. In Catalan, ordinal numbers are formed by adding the suffix "-è" to the cardinal number. In this lesson, we will explore how to form and use ordinal numbers in Catalan.

Formation of Ordinal Numbers[edit | edit source]

To form an ordinal number in Catalan, simply add the suffix "-è" to the cardinal number. The suffix "-è" is added to the end of the cardinal number, except for the numbers one, two, and three, which have irregular forms. Here are the ordinal numbers in Catalan:

  • Primer (first)
  • Segon (second)
  • Tercer (third)
  • Quart (fourth)
  • Cinquè (fifth)
  • Sisè (sixth)
  • Setè (seventh)
  • Vuitè (eighth)
  • Novè (ninth)
  • Desè (tenth)
  • Onzè (eleventh)
  • Dotzè (twelfth)
  • Tretzè (thirteenth)
  • Catorzè (fourteenth)
  • Quinzè (fifteenth)
  • Seixantè (sixteenth)
  • Setzantè (seventeenth)
  • Vuitantè (eighteenth)
  • Norantè (nineteenth)
  • Vintè (twentieth)

Usage of Ordinal Numbers[edit | edit source]

Ordinal numbers are used in Catalan to indicate the position or order of something in a series. For example:

  • El primer dia de la setmana és el dilluns. (The first day of the week is Monday.)
  • El cinquè aniversari de la meva filla és demà. (My daughter's fifth birthday is tomorrow.)
  • El vintè capítol del llibre és molt interessant. (The twentieth chapter of the book is very interesting.)

Ordinal numbers can also be used as adjectives to describe nouns. In this case, they must agree in gender and number with the noun they modify. For example:

  • La tercera hora de la classe és molt avorrida. (The third hour of class is very boring.)
  • Els segons plats del restaurant són molt bons. (The second courses of the restaurant are very good.)
