Breton Vocabulary - Education

Hi Breton learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will go through Breton vocabulary related to education. Education is an important part of any culture, and Breton culture is no exception. We will learn a range of vocabulary, from basic school subjects to more specific terms like doctoral thesis. We will also look at the education system in Brittany and some interesting cultural facts. Don't forget to check out the Vocabulary page for additional words and phrases.

Breton Education System[edit | edit source]

The education system in Brittany is primarily based on the French model. Education is compulsory from ages 6 to 16, with primary school (école primaire) lasting for five years, followed by secondary school (collège) for four years and then high school (lycée) for three years. Brittany also has a number of bilingual schools, where classes are taught in both French and Breton.

School Subjects[edit | edit source]

One of the first things you learn at school are the different subjects. Here are some school subjects in Breton:

Breton Pronunciation English
ar c'hentan [aʁ ˈxentan] mathematics
ar brezhoneg [aʁ brɛzoˈnek] Breton language
ar saozneg [aʁ sɔzˈneɡ] English language
ar sevenadur [aʁ sevənaˈdyʁ] culture

Now let's see some examples in context:

  • Person 1: Setu ar barzhoneg. (Here is the Breton book.)
  • Person 2: Mat an traoù! Penaos e fell deoc’h ? (Great! How do you want us to start?)

In this example, we can see the use of "ar barzhoneg" (the Breton language) and its pronunciation [aʁ baʁzoˈnek].

Academic Degrees[edit | edit source]

After completing higher education, you can earn various academic degrees. Here are some academic degrees related to education:

Breton Pronunciation English
an doa-labour [ən ˈdoa ˈlabuʁ] bachelor's degree
an treset [ən tʁeˈzɛt] master's degree
an tostù-kaer [ən tɔsˈty ˈkɛr] doctoral degree

Let’s see how they can be used:

  • Person 1: Penaos eo bet ho tostù-kaer ? (How was your doctoral degree ?)
  • Person 2: Ur wezh e-karg e oa bet, met bremañ emaon ganit. (Once it was heavy, but now I have it with me.)

Cultural Facts[edit | edit source]

In Breton culture, storytelling is an important part of education. Traditional tales and legends are often passed down through the oral tradition, from generation to generation. Breton mythology also features prominently in the education system. One popular topic is the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, which has strong links to Breton folklore.

In addition, Brittany has a long tradition of higher education. The University of Rennes, founded in 1735, is one of the oldest universities in France. It is also home to a number of prestigious research centres, including the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM).
