Bashkir Vocabulary - Count to 10

Hi Bashkir learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to count to 10 in Bashkir. Knowing how to count in any language is useful not only for basic communication but also when shopping, telling time, or understanding phone numbers. Don't forget to practice with native speakers on Polyglot Club and ask them any questions. Let's get started!

Bashkir Numbers[edit | edit source]

Bashkir numbers have a unique structure, and once you understand counting to 10, it is quite easy to count to higher numbers. The Bashkir numbering system is based on the decimal system like other common numbering systems.

Cardinal numbers[edit | edit source]

Below table illustrates Bashkir numbers from one to ten.

Bashkir Pronunciation English
икки [ik.ki] two
үч [yʃ] three
дүрт [dyrt] four
биш [biʃ] five
алты [al.tə] six
ете [je.te] seven
сигез [si.gez] eight
төшө [tø.ʃø] nine
он [on] ten

Ordinal numbers[edit | edit source]

Ordinal numbers are numbers that represent a position or order. Bashkir ordinal numbers are formed by adding "-чы" to the end of cardinal numbers, as the example below shows:

Bashkir Pronunciation English
беренче [be.ren.tʃe] first
иккенче [ik.ken.tʃe] second
үчүнчү [y.tʃyn.tʃy] third
дүртүнчү [dyrtyn.tʃy] fourth
бешинче [be.ʃyn.tʃe] fifth
алтынчы [al.tən.tʃɪ] sixth
етинче [je.tin.tʃe] seventh
сегизинче [se.gi.zin.tʃe] eighth
төшөнчү [tø.ʃøn.tʃy] ninth
оннчы [on.tʃy] tenth

Examples[edit | edit source]

To better understand how to use these numbers, let's create a simple dialogue between two people who are talking about the number of apples in a basket.

  • Person 1: Унда икки алма бар. (Unda ikki alma bar) (There are two apples in it)
  • Person 2: Эми, акыркы чак бередим. (Emi, akırqı çaq beredim.) (Okay, I will give you the last four)

Practice[edit | edit source]

To improve your Bashkir Vocabulary, practice counting with your Bashkir friends or tutor. A good exercise is to ask them to show you the equivalent number of fingers while practicing the numbers aloud. Additionally, you can create another dialogue where you negotiate the price of an item with a vendor. Don't forget to use the numbers in Bashkir!
