Adjectives - Επίθετα[edit | edit source]

Adjectives are words that describe or add further meaning to nouns (including pronouns). They have a gender, which can be masculine, feminine, or neuter. Just like definite articles and pronouns, adjectives must also have forms that represent each possible combination of gender, number, and case.

Greek adjectives are formed using the same three declensions and accent rules as Greek nouns. Additionally, just as each noun belongs to a particular declension, each adjective belongs to a specific declension family or grouping.

There are three classes of adjectives in Greek, and each adjective belongs to one of these classes. It's important to note that we're referring to classes, not declensions. For example, the Greek adjective ἀγαθός, meaning "good," belongs to the first class; ἀσφαλής, meaning "safe," belongs to the second class; and ταχύς, meaning "quick," belongs to the third class.

- First class: ἀγαθός (good), κακός (bad), καλός (beautiful), μέγας (great), μικρός (small), πολύς (much), ὅλος (whole)

- Second class: ἀσφαλής (safe), εὐαίσθητος (sensitive), ἰσχυρός (strong), ὑγιής (healthy), ἄρρωστος (sick)

- Third class: ταχύς (quick), βαθύς (deep), δύσκολος (difficult), εὐκολος (easy), κατάλληλος (suitable)
