It expresses something that a work is being done doing something else at the same time. It can be translated into English both by adding -ing to the end of the verb or using the conjunction "as". For example: "Gülü koklayarak" sevgilisinin gidişini seyretti. - Smelling the rose, he/she watched her lover go. He/she watched his/her lover go as he/she smelled the rose. Nevertheless, the meaning can be variable according to the context and occasionally can't be translated into English precisely as desired.
